Java Community Process (JCP) Names Day CTO Star Spec Lead for Pioneering Efforts on Content Management Standards JSR-170 and JSR-283

Day Software announces today that Day Software co-founder and CTO David Nuescheler was named as Star Spec Lead by the Java Community Process (JCP) program, a program dedicated since 1998 to supporting an open, participative process for driving the evolution of the Java platform and the international Java developer community.

CTO Nuescheler joined the JCP program in 2001 and in 2002 became the Spec Lead for JSR-170, Content Repository for Java Technology API. This specification, ratified in May 2005, pioneered the standards movement in the content management industry and advanced the notion of a common repository implementation for more traditional document management and newer web content and digital asset management disciplines. Following Nuescheler’s work driving the JCR standard, David became Spec Lead for JSR-170’s successor, JSR-283, which is now in Proposed Final Draft within the JCP.

“Back in 2001, it became clear to me that what developers needed was a standardized content repository for their web applications that handled both structured and unstructured data”, said Nuescheler. “What also became clear was that this repository needed to be something entirely new: something that combined the best of both relational databases and more traditional file systems. Features needed included transactionality and query ability from the relational database world as well as support for hierarchies and large binary streams from filesystems. Furthermore, instead of having additional features such as access control or versioning being implemented in the application layer, these services should be included in the repository implementation.”

Working in conjunction with Day Chief Scientist Roy Fielding, Nuescheler advanced the development of the reference implementation of the JSR-170 in the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), where the Apache Jackrabbit was officially launched as an Incubator Project in September 2004. For Nuescheler, the collaborative, community-driven process of the JCP was a natural fit with the open source, vendor-neutral Apache Foundation for building the reference implementation. Now on release 1.5.5, Apache Jackrabbit has been adopted by numerous 3rd software developers as their core open source repository implementation owing to the business-friendly, liberal-use Apache software license. Nuescheler next project is updating Jackrabbit to support JSR-283 and to drive further content repository standardization around JCR 2.0 and the proposed OASIS standard, CMIS.

“I’m honored to be recognized by the JCP,” said Nuescheler. “But perhaps more importantly, I’ve been honored to work within the JCP to advance critical new content management standards. I am excited to continue this work in the JCP, the Apache Software Foundation, and now OASIS to advance both JSR-283 and the emerging CMIS standard. 2009 looks to be an exciting time in the development of our industry.”
